Clay Holmes

Clay Holmes

Inspiration of domestic aesthetics dictates Clay’s style, subject and quality. His work has a strong physical
presence manifested by heavy impasto paint, bold stokes of the palette knife and brush. All of which creates a composition of the negative and positive space. Much like light and darkness, you cannot have one without the other, thus presenting a surreal experience that is understood by the observer.

Clay’s personal life philosophy is “balance”.. balance of spirit, family, self and career. This choice has lead him back to his desire of painting. For many years he has indulged in the art of plaster body casting creating abstract life sculptures. He specifically focused on the female form for the subject of line, shape and form. His completed pieces were often left with their original plaster white finish. This matte white finish enhances the contrast of light and shadow emphasizing his goal of line, shape and form. You will find that he carries this technique over into his painting as well. Work with a limited palette his paintings present a monochromatic flavor. His intent is to not have color distract the observer from the true subject.
